Spoonbill Books

Brand Strategy
Brand Identity

Type Design

A rebrand of a beloved bookshop located in the heart of Williamsburg, taking their history and customers into consideration. Spoonbill Books is a Brooklyn indie bookstore since 1999 that specializes in second-hand, rare, and new books on contemporary art, art history, and architecture.

DISCOVERY STAGE

Spoonbill Books owners, Jonas Kyle and former Miles Bellamy, present an authentic and likeable personality and have grown a tight-knit community. Visitors are greeted by shelves packed floor to ceiling with oddly specific collections of eclectic books. I wanted to capture the essence of their personality and space into the new identity.

LOGOMARK & VARIATIONS

The logo emphasizes bold and blockiness and incorporates an inverted bookmark icon, symbolizing the brand’s association with literature. The logo variations activate the custom typeface’s potential to stretch, expand, and change layout. These actions allude to the stacking and rearranging of books on a shelf.

COLOR TREATMENT

CUSTOM TYPEFACE

The Spoonbill typeface is inspired by the blocky forms of books and how they relate to each other on a shelf.

ARTIST POSTERS

The custom typeface is implemented throughout the identity system as a visual tool that looks into the artworks, books, and stories of featured artists.
