The "Asian American ABCs" is an phonics song designed to celebrate Asian American culture. Through 26 words and illustrations of Asian foods and Chinese traditions, this animation is a cultural journey that resonates with viewers of all ages.
CONCEPT/STORYBOARD
The animation begins with a dramatic unveiling of the curtains. The transitions are carefully designed to weave each scene together.
TRANSITIONS
A challenge I faced was transitioning seamlessly between scenes while capturing the essence of each word. I explored sensory cues like aroma and touch to depict how each word is experienced. I found that introducing grand moments to disrupt the flow made the transitions more impactful and memorable, like O→P and H→I.
COLOR & TYPE TREATMENT
Color plays a crucial role, with each word associated with a distinctive palette that reflects its essence and helps to signal transitions. Typography serves as a dynamic element that either integrates into the illustration or remains static at the bottom of the scene.
NOSTALGIC ILLUSTRATIONS
The animation features illustrations that evoke nostalgia for those who grew up with it, like me, transporting viewers to familiar settings and cherished memories from their own experiences.
